At the first appointment enquiries are made with regard to current state of health, past medical history, diet, levels of stress, quality of sleep and other matters relating to general health. The aim of this is to get to the bottom of why a condition as occurred and build up a picture of a person’s tendencies and constitution. Details are taken of medications, both prescribed and over the counter and also any supplements taken. It is helpful if you can bring along with you to your first appointment, a list of medications etc that you take, along with a snapshot of your diet, detailing what you eat over a period of say 4-5 days.
Also, it can be helpful to bring with you copies of recent blood tests results, so that these can also be taken into account.
Throughout the consultation your questions and concerns will be listened to carefully. The approach is a collaborative one between practitioner and client, taking into account your views on the history of the condition and working at your pace. A prescription of herbs is then specifically dispensed for you. Your blood pressure may be taken and physical examinations are undertaken where necessary. This initial consultation usually takes between 1 hour and 1.5 hrs.
Since 2020, appointments via zoom can be undertaken, especially if it is not possible for you to visit me in person.
At follow-up appointments, progress is monitored and the prescription may be adjusted in light of feedback from you. Further enquiries are made about the condition and your general health, building upon the case history taken at the first appointment and additional supportive advice is likely to be given. These consultations usually take approximately 45 minutes.
Herbal Medicines
Many Herbal medicines come in the form of a tincture – a tincture is made by steeping a herb in water and alcohol for a period of time and then straining it. Tinctures are preserved by the alcohol they contain, the alcohol also helps to extract constituents that are not water soluble, such as resins. Tinctures do not need to be kept in the fridge. The prescribed amount is measured and then diluted in water and taken two to three times per day in most cases. Teas, encapsulated herbs, supplements, creams or salves may also be prescribed. I use high quality herbal tinctures and teas – most are organically grown.
